Filter System Maintenance
Water tap filters are basically miniature forms of home filter systems. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes; the smallest one is like a tennis ball that fits on your kitchen tap, another one is the size of a loaf of bread and can be installed in the cold water line under the sink; there is also a counter top version about the size of a flask that has a pipe to direct water from the tap to pass through the filter.
The quality of tap filters depends on the brand and the model that you buy. But most of them can remove sediment, lead and rust, not to mention chlorine. They also improve the taste of water and its odor.
The biggest advantage of tap filters is that they are easy to install, cost less than other filters and last for a long time. You can get hundreds of litres of pure water before you need to replace the tap filter.
The big disadvantage is that if you do not replace the filter at the right time, it will release all the impurities that it has removed back into the water. There is also the danger of bacteria settling down on these filters over a period of time and giving your water an off taste.
However, changing the tap filter is as easy as changing a light bulb. All that you need to do is to remember when to change the filter to get the best service. Putting in an under-the-sink unit might take you longer, but you will be able to do it.
Since the tap filters remove chorine the water tastes sweeter and less pungent. You also don’t get to see particles of rust floating in the glass when you open a tap after a long time. These are removed by the tap filter.
