About Water Filter Cartridge

Water Filter Cartridge

Water filter cartridges must be cleaned regularly

The water filter cartridges form the heart of any water filtration system. These cartridges remove sediment, rust or dirt particles present in the water; remove elements like mercury or lead; neutralize chlorine; and kill micro organisms that may be harmful. The water that passes out is clean, hygienic and pure; tastes better, and smells better.

The two cartridges that are commonly used in water filtration systems are ceramic cartridges and carbon cartridges. The ceramic cartridges remove any particles that may be present in the water; some of them carry traces of silver and can kill microorganisms too. They also improve the taste of water and its odor.

The carbon cartridges can trap small and big particles; remove heavy metals such as aluminum and lead and improve the taste of water. They are used in most refrigerator filtration systems, and are by far the most commonly used cartridges.

However, both ceramic cartridges and carbon cartridges have a small life span. They need to be replaced after three or six months based on use; or after they have washed a specified volume of water.

All manufacturers indicate the life of a cartridge in the manuals that come with water filters. They also provide details about the cartridge being used in the filter, especially the cartridge number. This number is most important in identifying or sourcing the right cartridge because each water filter uses a different kind of cartridge.

Depending upon the water filter being used, a user can wash or back flush the cartridges. This removes the dirt that may have accumulated on the surface of the cartridge and made it less effective. The cartridge’s purifying power is restored once the dirt is washed away. Some water filter systems use two or more than two cartridges. In these cases, each cartridge removes a different kind of impurity.
